Features of Installations for Pulse Materials Processing Design and Numerical Simulation

The paper presents mathematical modeling of magnetic-pulse metal processing. Numerical simulation of the magnetic-pulse hardening process is still a difficult issue, since it requires a multi-physical analysis. Namely, the simulating of electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical fields, as well as accounting for phase transformations in the metal structure. In this paper, the result of a simplified simulation of the pulse quenching process was obtained without taking into account structural transformations. As an illustrative example, a 3D model of a system for magnetic pulse hardening of a disc knife was developed. The system consists of a two-turn inductor and a hardened knife made of special quality steel. The magnetic-pulse field distribution has been analyzed and optimized by software based on the FEM. Electromagnetic and thermal problems are solved in the time domain and the problem of the stress-strain state is solved. Simulation of pulsed magnetic quenching processes is an important procedure for knife validation for industrial applications.
