Methods Utilized to Improve Resilience of Power Systems Against Ice Storms

This paper overviews different solutions to power line icing that are commonly used in power systems, and presents their operating principle and mechanism, effectiveness, and challenges. It will begin with a synopsis of the problem followed by a review and categorization of the most common solutions. The solutions are categorized in two groups of active and passive solutions. The active solutions are organized based on their operating principle, which is driven either by mechanical force or thermal energy. Passive approaches, which are mainly preventive solutions, are discussed. A comparison of different methods and a discussion regarding the negative effects of each solution on the power line system are also presented.
