Fine-Grained Air Quality Monitoring with Low-Cost Sensors and IoT: Trends, Challenges, and Future Directions

With 91% of the world population breathing air that does not meet current air quality standards, various approaches have been investigated to provide communities with more accu-rate and localized air quality data. With the advent of low-cost sensors, the strategic deployment of sensors combined with the connectivity of an internet of things (IoT) platform, fine-grained air quality monitoring can now be provided to communities. In this paper, we describe what the current trends are in providing fine-grained air quality monitoring using low-cost sensors and IoT as well as the challenges that currently exist in the field. We also describe what future directions and opportunities exist to realize the potential of this field where communities can be provided with a better understanding of current air quality and how it affects their health. These insights and transparency to the community can lead to potential action that provides healthier and more sustainable communities.
