A Review on Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Power Sources

Complete transformation of conventional vehicles into Electric Vehicles is quite a challenging task due to limitations such as infrastructure, high cost and lack of general public approach. Hybrid Electric Vehicle provides a pathway to complete hybridization of vehicles which will help to mitigate vehicle emissions and reduces consumptions of fossil fuels. Current research and development in the core components of HEVs like storage system, power train and brushless DC motor provides a good opportunity for complete hybridization of vehicle. Governments of developed and developing countries have taken many initiatives to shift from conventional vehicles to hybrid and electric vehicle. This paper provides an overview of hybrid electric vehicle from the primitive stages of development to the current scenarios along with their source of power. The description of components of HEVs, historical aspects, challenges and possible solutions are also holistically presented in this paper.
