Optimal Design of Grid Tied Hybrid Microgrid for Hospital to Enhance Reliability and Sustainability

With the development of new technologies in the field of medical science, continuous power supply is essential to run the modern life supporting equipment, especially when power outage occurs due to grid failure or any natural disaster. Usually, every hospital has their own diesel generator for providing emergency power back up. However, diesel generator has some limitations, like it may fail to start in emergency conditions. Further, power generated by diesel generator is not eco-friendly. Therefore, this paper developed a grid tied micro grid for a cancer hospital situated in Imphal, Manipur, India, considering actual load profile of the hospital for all the seasons. In this work, HOMER Grid software developed by NREL, USA, has been used to design a microgrid for the hospital. From the simulation results, it is observed that the grid tied micro grid comprise of solar photo voltaic, battery storage and diesel generator can meet the hospital load autonomously in case of grid failure. Further, this optimized system is reliable, cost effective and environment friendly.
