Improving QoS performance of ATM and MPLS using Multicast Routing and ACO Optimization

In many networks, numerous applications send information from a source node to multiple destination nodes. The ever-increasing network users add enormous stress on the existing network infrastructure, causing congestion and lowering network performance. ATM is considered as a promising technique which uses a cell switching method to deliver the data to the desired destination. However, the performance of ATM is limited due to several issues such as the complex switching process, congestion, and queuing delay. Recently, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) has gained attraction in this technology due to its reliability and efficiency. Multicasting has become a prime focus to improve the efficiency of these networks to ensure the QoS for multimedia data. In this field, tree construction plays an important role in identifying the path from source to destination. However, these trees can be optimized, thus, we incorporate ACO (Ant colony optimization) based optimization schemes to construct the optimal tree. The objective function includes cost, delay and bandwidth as the important parameters to find the optimal solution. The performance of the proposed ACO based approach is measured with ATM and MPLS protocols in terms of throughput, queuing delay and slot success rate. The comparative analysis reported the slot success rate performance as slot success rate is obtained as 0.64, 0.69, 0.75, and 0.81 by using ATM, ATM-ACO, MPLS, and MPLS-ACO techniques, respectively. Thus, the proposed approach MPLS with ACO improves performance significantly for multicasting.
