Loss Allocation in Three Phase Unbalanced Distribution Network Using Current Summation Approach

Being the weakest link in the power transmission system, loss in the distribution network (DN) is significantly large. The network users pay for their power consumption, and the losses in the distribution network remain unbilled. Loss allocation is an approach to allocating the network losses to the users according to their contribution to the losses. This paper proposes current summation-based loss allocation techniques for unbalanced three-phase four-wire DN. The current in the branches is expressed in terms of current injection by the loads. Allocation of cross-terms of current is calculated using quadratic relation between power flows and losses. The loss in phases, neutral and dirt corresponding to each branch is allocated separately to the contributing currents. The sum of loss allocation in relevant branches is added to compute the total loss allocation to the end-user. The proposed technique is tested on IEEE 13 bus test system. The results obtained are presented and discussed in the paper.
