Standalone PV Based BESS Using Bidirectional DC-DC SEPIC/ZETA Converter

As the energy demand in today's world is gradually increasing and conventional sources of energy are limited hence, we need to shift our focus more towards renewable sources of energy generation. Power generation by solar photovoltaic is a viable option to replace our conventional energy sources. Solar photovoltaic power is intermittent, so we need an energy storage system. This paper comes up with a standalone solar-based battery energy storage system (BESS) exercising a two-way SEPIC/ZETA circuitry for discharging and ramping up battery level. A double loop control is implemented for bidirectional converter operation. GA (Genetic Algorithm) and PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) tools are utilized for optimal control. The operation of the proposed arrangement has been simulated and justified through MATLAB/SIMULINK results under varying conditions in both charge/discharge battery situations.
