Design of Hexagonal Ring Shaped Two Port MIMO Antenna for Sub-6 GHz and WLAN Application for Mobile Devices

The design of dual port multiple input multiple output (MIMO) hexagonal ring with tap shaped radiator functioning in Sub-6 GHz and wireless local area network (WLAN) applications for mobile devices is analyzed. The two antenna elements are constructed on FR-4 substrate with size of
$43\times 20\text{mm}^{2}$
, thickness 0.8mm and excited by two co-planar waveguide (CPW) fed technique to operate smoothly with frequency span of (3.24 – 3.62 GHz) and (4.20 – 6.52 GHz) fulfilling the bandwidth requirement of Sub-6 GHz and WLAN bands. In order to be the potential candidate for MIMO practical applications, the two CPW grounds are connected with each other along with an inverted-T shaped radiator embedded between two ground planes acting as a decoupling structure to reduce the interference between antenna elements. Moreover, the proposed MIMO antenna generate bandwidth of 11% in lower Sub-6 GHz and 43% in upper WLAN frequency bands at two resonating frequencies of 3.5 and 4.9 GHz, respectively, isolation >20dB, gain around 2.5dBi, efficiency around 80% throughout the desired bands. Finally, the MIMO parameters like envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) < 0.01 and diversity gain (DG) ∼ 10dB are also achieved in Sub-6 GHz and WLAN operating bands.
