Feasibility Analysis of Applying Carbon Fiber Composite Conductor in Medium and Heavy Icing Area

Carbon fiber composite conductor (CFCC) is an ideal new conductor that can replace traditional aluminum conductor steel reinforced(ACSR) in current overhead transmission and transformation lines. In severe ice coating areas, the iced conductor brings a greater load to the tower, the tower is thus more likely to be twisted or even collapsed. Therefore, it is necessary to use a lighter conductor which has a high tensile strength. On this occasion, CFCC is an ideal choice. This paper mainly used the self-developed non-linear dynamic model of the conductor-insulator system to establish a multi-span three-degree-of-freedom simulation line model which was in the medium and heavy icing area, and the relevant conclusions were summarized. The main content of this paper is divided into two parts: The first part set the wind speed to vary between 5m/s and 30m/s, and the thickness of the ice was 10mm-50mm. The dynamic tension of the conductor, the force of the insulator, and the displacement of the wind deviation were calculated. The above data were checked against safety standards, and compared with the calculation results of the same type of ACSR. The advantages and disadvantages of the CFCC when facing wind deviation in the medium and heavy icing area were summarized. The second part was aimed at ice-shedding in heavy icing and great lap area, on which occasion the length of span was 3000 m-5000 m. The conductor sag under different operating tensions, and the interphase clearance when the second uneven ice-shedding occurred were calculated. The above simulation results were checked for safety issue and the compared with the calculation results of ACSR. Then relevant conclusions about the application of CFCC in the heavy ice area of large spans were drawn.
