H2O: Smart Drinking Water Quality Monitoring System

Since water is one of the most fundamental necessities for human living, it is necessary to include some systems for monitoring water quality on a regular basis. Water contamination is responsible for around 40% of all fatalities worldwide. Especially, New York is often subject to complaints regarding water quality and fear of contamination. There is an ever-growing fear of what viruses are waterborne and how to track if the water you are drinking has been exposed. Current approaches to this problem start with gathering a sample of water from different locations and manually testing them. This lacks continuous monitoring in which a waterborne disease could have already contaminated the drinking source and the previous water sample is not a clear indication for different times of the day and even the ever-changing environment. To provide a safe supply of drinking water, the quality must be monitored in real time, we propose the design and development of a low-cost system for real-time water quality monitoring in this project. The system, which consists of many sensors, is used to measure the physical and chemical properties of water. Water characteristics such as temperature, pH and ORP can be monitored. The core controller can process the measured values from the sensors. As core microcontroller, the Arduino model and Raspberry Pi are utilized through wireless communication. The sensor data can be accessed through a mobile application. The time-series sensor data is analyzed using LSTM (Long-Short-Term Memory) neural networks for forecasting.
