Solutions of 5G RAN on High-Speed Train: Proposed for 5G RAN system equipped directly onto the high-speed train

The High-Speed Train (HST) scenario is one of the promising 5G deployment scenarios, which can offer broadband access to passengers on a high-speed train running up to 500 km/h. Such very high mobility as well as the characteristics of 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) brings about considerable technical challenges to be coped with, and the traditional way of mobile operator's wireless signal coverage along the HST will be unsustainable. In this paper, we propose two approaches for 5G RAN system equipped directly onto the high-speed train, rather than the traditional way of outdoor signal penetrating indoors. The advantages as well as disadvantages of the two approaches have been compared and analyzed. In the end of the paper, a solution is proposed for integrating the 5G RAN system equipped directly onto the high-speed train with the original passenger service platform of the HST, to support value-added services.
