Hybrid PV-Wind-Battery Management System based on 7L Switched-Capacitor MLI

Efficient and better utilization of batteries in standalone renewable energy systems is one of the challenging issues in nowadays power systems, in addition to harvesting maximum power out of resources and stabilize the system under different situations. This paper, proposes an efficient energy management supervisor (EMS), which deals with above problems, where a Photovoltaic (PV) and Wind energy resources are used to supply a DC and AC loads with a battery as a backup source. The PV/Wind system used maximum power trackers in order to extract maximum power out of each system. The core of the proposed EMS is based on simple logic rules with the objective of satisfying the loads and optimize battery utilization with stable system operation. Furthermore, the AC load has been fed using a switched capacitor multilevel inverter, which enables higher efficiency, low distortion at the AC load and used reduced semiconductor rating devices. The proposed system performance validated using MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the simulation results showed high efficiency, constant DC-Link voltage, and better utilization of the battery with low harmonics at the AC load.
