Detecting Desertification at Ancient Oases in North Africa Using Remote Sensing

This paper presents a remote sensing workflow for identifying activities and challenges that threaten past and traditional water management systems. High-resolution imagery and a standardised image interpretation workflow was used for digitising sites and this information was combined with data from archaeological fieldwork. Monitoring of changes since the 1980s in Morocco and Libya was done using Google Earth Engine and Landsat and Sentinel-2.
