Pre-processing Techniques for Offline Tamil Handwritten Character Recognition

Handwritten Character Recognition (HWCR) is one of the difficult tasks in the field of pattern recognition and machine learning. In the HWCR application, human handwritten characters are recognized by the computer. Moreover, this can also be utilized in other applications such as postal processing script recognition, banking security, and scripting language identification. In the Handwritten Character recognition, the preprocessing phase has a great significance to improve the character recognition accuracy. In this paper, various preprocessing techniques, used for offline handwritten character recognition are discussed. Additionally, the various challenges concerning offline handwritten recognition are also addressed in this paper. The primary objective of this is to explain the significance of preprocessing techniques for offline HWCR in Tamil script.
