Optimization of Charging in a Multi-Port EV Charging Station for Emergency Vehicle Priority Fast Charging

This paper presents a system design to implement an optimized charging option in a Multiport Electric Vehicle charging station to facilitate fast charging for emergency vehicles such as ambulances, police vehicles etc. This feature enables priority charging for the priority loads by optimizing charging in all the ports. The different scenarios are explained in which the priority load can have faster charging at different charging speeds. A Simulink model of a standalone Multiport EV charging station is developed in which the source is a solar PV panel with bi-directional DC-DC converters and the control mechanism is achieved by Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique. The PWM technique is used for switching control of the bi-directional DC-DC converters so that the charging to connected loads are controlled to provide slow charging, fast charging, and also reverse charging capabilities. Here the reverse charging method is also used for fast charging for the other loads. The simulation results are analyzed and each of the scenarios of optimization of charging is being shown by a MATLAB function control block so as to validate that by changing the pulse width the optimization of charging in ports can be done for providing priority fast charging for emergency vehicles.
