Solitons in Optical Fibers

An analytical solution corresponding to the fundamental soliton of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is obtained. The main properties of higher‐order soliton solutions of the NLSE, as well as other kinds of soliton pulses, namely, dark solitons, bistable solitons, XPM‐paired solitons, and optical similaritons are discussed. The split‐step Fourier method to numerically solve the NLSE is described. The possibility of reducing the NLSE to a dynamical system of equations describing the evolution of a finite set of pulse characteristics is demonstrated considering both the variational approach and the method of moments.
