Performance Analysis and Comparisons of Hybrid Precoding Scheme for Multi-user mmWave Massive MIMO System

In order to alleviate the power consumption and cost challenges of digital beamforming, hybrid beamforming is being proposed by the actors of communication industry. In comparison to digital beamforming, hybrid beamforming offers a promising solution in terms of low complexity and energy efficiency. Various works have been done on hybrid beamforming but works that considered two stage multiuser hybrid beamforming taking energy efficiency, system complexity and bit error rate hasn’t been done yet. This work considered two-stage multiuser hybrid beamforming algorithm so as to reduce the difficulties associated with optimization of RF and baseband beamforming matrices. The simulation result shows that the Kalman precoding offers good performance compared to zero-forcing and analog only beamforming ,and it also gives comparable result when compared to MMSE precoding in terms of BER metrics. From the energy efficiency plot, we show that the hybrid precoding scheme gives better energy efficiency than the optimal and the near-optimal digital precoding schemes such as zero-forcing precoding and minimum mean square error precoding scheme. The ZF precoding schemes gives low computational complexity compared to MMSE and kalman precoding schemes.
