Smart Cities and the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things has come from a long way since the first soft drink freezer was programmed to connect to the Internet and report its inventory alongside temperatures. Smart cities are one such development of the internet of things with many appliances, gadgets, tools, utilities, and even vehicles having internet connectivity. This chapter seeks to investigate the development of smart cities from a perspective of the internet of things before investigating the future of such a strategic combination. It will also use existing examples of smart cities to forecast what the future holds for cities seeking to utilize the internet of things in optimizing their operations and resource usage.
