An effective modelling approach for simulation of thyristor rectifiers

The paper presents the mathematical modeling of thyristor circuits as a framework for development of a JavaScript application to be used as a pedagogical tool for teaching and self-studying of thyristor controlled rectifiers. The application’s core is the knowledge of the circuit’s current mathematical expression as a function of rectifier topology, source and load parameters, and operating modes. The developed application enables the user to simulate several rectifier topologies, and set the thyristor’s firing angle, variation of source characteristics and analysis of several load types by individually setting resistance, inductance and back electromotive force values, in the full theoretical range of variation. If the user changes any circuit parameter the simulation is automatically executed and results are updated almost instantaneously, thus promoting a better understanding of the circuit, facilitating the analysis of the relationship between the various voltages and currents in the rectifier.
