Analysis of STATCOM Oscillations using Ambient Synchrophasor Data in Dominion Energy

In this paper, we provide a preliminary investigation of poorly damped oscillations from a STATCOM in Dominion Energy’s system using ambient synchrophasor data-based methods. Synchrophasor data from multiple months are analyzed using parametric and non-parametric spectral analysis techniques as tools for understanding the oscillation phenomena. As a part of the analysis, relationships between estimated damping and system loading are drawn to arrive at a hypothesis.
