Electrical and Thermal Active Co-Management for Lithium-ion Batteries

With the increased market of electric vehicle, more advanced and comprehensive battery thermal management system with active cooling strategy needs to be investigated to ensure enhanced battery pack performances. This paper presents the study of electrical and thermal co-management for Lithiumion batteries using multiphysics computational methods. The modeling process includes finite element simulation and Gaussian process (GP) based surrogate models. The model is validated using experimental data, where the temperature change of the battery is predicted. The effects of coolant velocity and battery charging C-rate are studied, and a response surface of the maximum temperature is created using the GP model. An active cooling system control strategy is then derived based on the GP model, and the effectiveness of the co-management strategy is demonstrated with a case study.
