Travelling wave based fault location scheme for UPFC compensated transmission lines

As modern power system needs to be fault free, we should know about the fault location, detect the fault and cure it as soon as possible so in this paper fault location approaches (FLAs) are done by using different methods. The different FLAs are intrinsic time decomposition (ITD), empirical mode decomposition (EMD), S-transform (ST). The accuracy of FLAs is tested for different cases like High resistance. To simulate, a 500 kV transmission system is considered with a 100 MVA FACTS device. Estimation of arrival time wave (ATWs) estimates are made by all the FLAs mentioned above. These estimated ATWs are utilized in calculating location of faults and their respective percentage errors. From the results, it is found that EMD based FLAs are performing better than ITD, ST based FLAs. However, all FLAs produced acceptable results for all considered cases.
