Prototype Tests of Induction/Synchronous Magnetic Gears

Magnetic gears can change speed and transmit torque without any mechanical contact. Therefore, they have low vibration, low noise, and are easy to maintain. Several types of magnetic gears have been proposed. Among them, a flux-modulated-type magnetic gear has higher torque density and efficiency than conventional magnetic gears. One of the features of magnetic gears is a torque limiter function, which allows magnetic gears to step out and cut off power when overloaded. On the other hand, after stepping out, they cannot transmit power again unless the load torque is removed to some extent. To resolve the issue, this paper presents a novel induction/synchronous magnetic gear with a cage rotor bar, and the prototype tests are conducted.
