Transverse-Flux-type Switched Reluctance Motor with Permanent Magnets Applying Reverse Bias Magnetic Field

A switched reluctance motor (SRM) consists of only stator and rotor cores, and windings. Thus, it has a simple and robust structure, and is low cost. However, torque density and efficiency of SRM are generally inferior to those of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). This paper presents a novel transverse-flux-type switched reluctance motor (TFSRM). The TFSRM has permanent magnets in the rotor cores for applying reverse bias magnetic field, which can expand the operating area and improve both torque and efficiency. The validity and usefulness of the proposed TFSRM are proved by a three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM).
