A Study on the Magnetic Polarizability Tensors of Minimum Metal Anti-Personnel Landmines

The Magnetic Polarizability Tensor (MPT) is a characterization of a metal object with coefficients that depend on the object’s shape, size, material, and excitation frequency. This property can be utilized to minimize false alarm rates and improve target classification on landmine detectors capable of measuring MPT spectral signatures of target objects. This paper studies such characterizations of four landmines and their components for the first time. The MPT signatures of their components were then compared with each other. It was found that firing pins and springs in most landmines were responsible for the magnetic aspect of the landmine’s MPT.
