Bandwidth and Gain Enhancement using FSS on CPW-fed Rectangular Patch Antenna for 5G mm-Wave Applications

In this study, CPW (Coplanar Waveguide) fed traditional rectangular patch antenna was taken as a reference, and bandwidth and gain were improved by using FSS (Frequency Selective Surface) structures for 5G mm-Wave applications. Firstly, a 3×3 hexagonal loop FSS structure was used on the back surface of the antenna. The increase values of the antenna parameters were 2.8877 dBi 3.161 GHz and 42.851 dB for maximum gain, −10 dB bandwidth and reflection coefficient, respectively. A dual-band characteristic resonance at 28.9 GHz and 33.75 GHz frequencies was obtained with this structure. Secondly, 3×2 FSS hexagonal loop structure and ground plane were used on the back surface of the antenna. the maximum antenna gain was 3.5063 dBi. The increase values of the antenna parameters were 3.5063 dBi and 4.834 GHz for maximum gain and −10 dB bandwidth, respectively.
