A Technique of Risk Management for Medical Laboratory Equipment

One of the most significant instruments for diagnosing patients in hospitals is Medical Laboratory Equipment (MLE). Laboratory testing is essential in making medical decisions, so it must be credible and accurate. The research also proposed a methodology for lowering the hazards associated with MLE management. The methodology employed was the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). To overcome the limitations of traditional FMEA, a technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was used. A risk priority number (RPN) was assigned to each piece of investigated MLE to establish its risk value. The RPN data collected can be used to improve equipment performance and prioritize maintenance activities. This research was applied to a dataset from 15 different hospitals in Egypt that belong to 150 MLE. The hematology analyzer, the chemistry analyzer, and the centrifuge are types of the MLE. The TOPSIS technique was used to rank the MLE risk, yielding new RPN values. The TOPSIS technique has been proven for its robustness in prioritizing the risk value of MLE in comparison to the traditional FMEA. As a result, a roadmap for maintenance and scrapping decisions is laid out.
