Abstract:
The study discussed about the waterway transportation system in Myanmar and experiencing accidents cases in that area in order to provides effective measures to improve level of safety standards and criteria. The data used in this paper are collected from the annual accident report of the Department of Marine Administration (DMA) of Myanmar and 238 accident cases are taken into considered for analysis. After describing about the general character of waterway transport system, this paper focuses on the accidents cases which occurred during the year (2007–2018) by categorizing the accident type, ship type, accident location and number of person death and loss. Statistics show that, this study realizes that sinking is the major cause of accident while the inland cargo, passenger vessels and coastal fishing vessels are leading role of vessels which can cause accidents frequently. Moreover, the Ayeyarwady river and its delta region as well as Tanintharyi coastal region is the most hazardous area where most of the accidents occurred. The responsible Maritime Authorities is necessary to accelerate the safety standards, how to fully supervise ship operator and owners to follow and implement IMO guidelines and safety regulations.
