Multi-Objective Optimization with Two-Stage Design Approach of IPM Motors for Compressor Applications

The paper discusses the improvement of Interior Permanent-Magnet (IPM) motor design for use in compressor applications in air conditioning by utilizing multi-objective optimization on slit design patterns on the rotor of the IPM motors. The IPM motor designs are conducted using the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the Finite Element Methods (FEM) with the proposed two-stage design process to simultaneously optimize torque, torque ripple, cogging torque and efficiency. The advantages of the slit design for optimization are the low production cost, compatibility with the existing control system, and the effectiveness of reducing torque ripple as well as improving efficiency of the original motor design.
