Design and Simulation Analysis of HIRA for Hardening of Critical Facilities against IEMI

In this paper, design, and Simulation analysis of Half Impulse Radiating Antenna (HIRA) for Hardening of Military and Civilian Establishments from Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) was carried out. IEMI is the act of intentionally generating a transient electromagnetic short pulse which has very high intensity peak values that are used to disrupt the electronic and electrical equipment operation. To produce a high intensity, fast rise time, short pulses (UWB signal) which covers a wide range of frequencies, a specific type of antenna is required. One such promising antenna would be HIRA. The HIRA is a transient antenna that take transient voltage as input and radiate Ultra-Wideband (UWB) electromagnetic field signals. Defence Critical Infrastructure need to be protected against Intentional transient Electromagnetic pulses. High Level of protection for IEMI will be done by hardening the electronic systems using electromagnetic barrier with different architectural Point of Entries (PoE) treatments. In this Paper, IEMI hardening of RF enclosure with different architectural PoE’s carried out by evaluating its Shielding Effectiveness (SE) using 3D EM simulation and Practical measurements.
