Circular Patch Antenna with Rectangular Slots and DGS for UWB and Multiband Applications

A Circular patch antenna with rectangular slots (CPRS) and Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is presented in this paper. The even and uneven rectangular slot areas are considered. Better performance is obtained for the antenna with even slot areas. The CPRS antenna is a multiband antenna operating in three frequency bands with a bandwidth of 350 MHz (11.02 GHz – 11.37 GHz), 1.07 GHz (13.64 GHz – 14.71 GHz), and 1.54 GHz (17.59 GHz – 19.13 GHz) with 6 dBi peak gain. Adding DGS improves the bandwidth and gain making the antenna useful for UWB applications. With the introduction of DGS to the proposed CPRS antenna, frequency bandwidth of 3.10 GHz (4.98 GHz – 8.08 GHz) and 8.51 GHz (11.49 GHz – 20 GHz) with 6.9 dBi peak gain is obtained.
