Damage Assessment Post Severe Cyclonic Storm "YAAS" Using Synthetic Aperture Radar

Assessing extent of flooding and damage post any disaster is of prime importance for planning effective relief and rescue operations. SAR satellites due to its all weather and day/night capability help in preparation of damage proxy map. In the present study, we use coherence and amplitude based change detection approaches to map damage caused by severe cyclonic storm "Yass" in parts of Odisha, India post its landfall on 26

Coherence change detection approach is able to detect subtle variations in coherence post disaster in parts of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Paradip while completely misses the flooded parts of Bhadrak area which are clearly seen in amplitude ratio image. It is noted that the amplitude changes possibly due to moisture variations in pre event images are significant and may have hampered the detection of flooded region using coherence based approach.
