Evaluating the Effect of POA Compensation on Polinsar Coherence for L-and-S Band Airborne SAR Data

The geometric anomalies of ground targets can change the polarization basis of the incident wave. The target orientation along the radar look direction has a significant impact on the interpretation of polarimetric data. Polarization Orientation Angle (POA) compensation is done to compensate the orientation effect for such targets. In this work, we try to evaluate the effect of POA compensation on polarimetric-interferometric (PolInSAR) coherence. We have used dual-frequency L-S-band airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data acquired over Rosamond, California, United States. The results show that POA compensation introduced a change in the coherence magnitude for all polarization channels. The statistical variation in the coherence is not prominent in HH and VV channels, however, significant change is observed in HV coherence. The paper also reflects on the possibility of using cross-frequency PolInSAR data for coherence estimation.
