Assessment of Black Carbon Concentration and Delta C Over Ahmedabad

The present study has been carried out with an objective to understand the variation of black carbon in Ahmedabad. To achieve this objective measurements of black carbon has been carried out in Ahmedabad city continuously for seven months (October-2020 to April-2021). The black carbon observations shows a diurnal variation with a peak in morning and night and trough during the afternoon time. The average concentration range is observed to be ~ 6 to 22 µg/m
³
, ~ 2.5 to 7 µg/m
³
and ~10 to 24 µg/m
³
respectively during morning, afternoon and night. The maximum BC mass concentration is observed during February-2021. Delta C is also calculated to separate wood smoke from diesel exhaust. The maximum value of Delta C is observed in December at night. The delta-C value was also found to be a readily measured indicator of fireworks emissions during periods when wood combustion was not likely to be present. For Ahmedabad the major contributor of this anthropogenic emission is vehicular emission.
