Application of Renewable Energy Sources for Rural Electrification at a Remote Outer Island

Many remote outer islands in Madura lack the electricity and high cost to connect them with the electrical grid from the government. However, the location has abundant renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy, and it is suitable for installing dedicated renewable energy power systems for electrification. This study uses HOMER simulation software to simulate the solar-wind hybrid system to fulfill the electrical energy demand in the remote outer island. The solar-wind hybrid system provides 100% electrical energy with possible investment costs. The total initial capital from developing renewable power sources is estimated to be USD 4,02 million, USD 548,33 thousand, and USD 1,4 million for Massalima Island, Masakambing Island, and Karamian Island, respectively. The COE is $0,548 per kWh, and it is viable for electricity costs in the remote outer island. This COE can be reduced by utilizing excess electrical energy for heating and cooling purposes. It also improves the economic condition in rural areas.
