Application of Simulation Modeling as a Replacement for Laboratory Practice in Engineering Education

The application of simulation modeling for replacing the higher education laboratory workshop during the educational process. It is considered on the example of studying transient processes in alternating current networks and modeling the electric field of a high-voltage insulator. In the first case, a sequence of laboratory work on the study of a three-phase short circuit is proposed. The description of the the electrical system’s model in the Matlab-Simulink software package and methods for calculating the parameters of the main elements are given. In the second part, the main aspects of modeling suspended polymer high-voltage insulation of overhead power lines in the COMSOL Multiphysics 5.6 software package are considered. Analytical expressions of the electromagnetic field’s mathematical model around the insulator are given. The main stages of working with the program interface are highlighted. Recommendations on the density of the finite element mesh are given. A gradient picture of the electric’s potential distribution near the insulator’s surface is presented. The author's assessment of the possibility of introducing these complexes within the educational process is given.
