Online Dictionaries in Process of Foreign Language Learning in Engineering Education

The article researches the possibilities of using online resources, namely online electronic dictionaries, in the process of foreign language learning in engineering education. The advantages of online dictionaries (easy access, time and space efficiency, free access, actual vocabulary, built-in sound synthesizer, great variety of languages, multifunctioning and links to different resources and communities) are pointed out and online bilingual and monolingual dictionaries are described. Cambridge Dictionary, Reverso Context and Multitran as most popular online dictionaries are observed in the connection with engineering education. Some peculiarities of the dictionaries are exposed. The search results on the example of electrical engineering terms "voltage" and "treeing" in Cambridge Dictionary, Reverso Context and Multitran are presented. Some practical developing skills suggestions in using online electronic dictionaries during class and independent work are given. A students’ guide to online electronic dictionaries practice includes some steps from choosing a dictionary according to a student’s needs to pronunciation tips (stress, syllables and sounds) and words meaning and collocations. A set of thirteen exercises aimed to help the engineering students to acquire skills of working with online electronic dictionaries of various types more successfully is exposed.
