Inkjet-printing for bio-functionalizing paper-based electrochemical biosensors

To achieve the challenging aim of manufacturing fully integrated paper-based electrochemical biosensors that directly transfer the measured data to a user´s smartphone, the integration of different fabrication technologies is required. Within the H2020 project IMPETUS, a pilot line based on a roll-to-roll printing machine is developed to comply with the demands of a high-quality mass fabrication process of fully integrated biosensors. Beside the processes for mounting electronic chips or printing electrodes and other electronic parts, an inkjet module is developed and integrated for enabling the inline roll-to-roll biofunctionalization of biosensors. Here, the technology of inkjet printing for bio-functionalization, as an integral key technique of the pilot line, is represented with respect to several aspects of development. In particular, the functionality of the inkjet-printed biomolecules in the immunochromatographic assays is proven and the electrochemical detection of two analytes of interests in parallel is demonstrated.
