High Power Factor and Reduced Ripple Flyback Converter for Universal AC Voltage Fed LED Driver

This paper discusses about the operation of proposed flyback based reduced ripple AC-DC converter, which can be utilized for applications such as Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting, battery charging and etc. The proposed converter is derived by connecting a boost converter across the terminal of output of the flyback converter. The discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) operation of the flyback converter helps to achieve power factor greater than the 0.985 as well as voltage step down with universal input voltage range (90V-270V). The boost converter connected parallel to the output voltage supports to eliminate the low frequency output voltage and current ripple. Hence, the capacitance required by the output filter will be reduced significantly, which leads to replacement of bulky electrolytic capacitors with film capacitors. The operation of the proposed LED driver for 62W/0.5A LED under universal input voltage range has been validated through the simulation study in PSIM software and achieved a current ripple of less than 5% with reduced capacitance.
