Tuning and control of the magnetic properties of a 2D nanomagnet

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic applications. Here, we investigate the strain and electric field dependent magnetic, electronic and transport properties of monolayer CrOCl by using First-principles based calculations. Our study shows that strain can induce material phase changes from a magnetic semiconductor to half metal to magnetic metal leading to interesting spin-resolved conductance with 100% spin filtering. Furthermore, the DFT calculated I-V curves with observed conductance fluctuations and switching efficiency shows high strain assisted tunability. Compressive strain introduced maximum change in the
$T_{c}$
, reached to 298 K at
$S_{A}=-8\ \%$
, suggesting the existence of a room temperature ferromagnetic ordering which is unique in such 2D materials. These properties indicates that CrOCl is a versatile 2D material with multi-phase capabilities have promising applications for future nano-spintronic devices.
