Numerical prediction of hydrodynamic forces and moments of KCS in shallow water

Restricted water depth significantly impacts the ship’s manoeuvrability. The pressure distribution around the hull causes a variation in the values of hydrodynamic derivatives, resulting in a significant change in the vessel’s hydrodynamic forces and moments. In this paper, a benchmark model of a KCS hull is employed to analyse the manoeuvring characteristics in shallow water. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation- based Numerical (Planar Motion Mechanism) PMM test has been conducted to obtain the hydrodynamic (manoeuvring) coefficient at different drift angles using the chimaera (overset) technique. The computation’s Numerical uncertainties were estimated using the verification and validation study. The effect of water depth on the surge, sway, and yaw moment was investigated for a 1.5 h/T (depth to draft) ratio of deep and shallow water. The experimental trajectory data from the literature were compared with the CFD results and in good agreement.
