Effect of wind speed in Undersea Acoustic Communications

The effect of noise in undersea acoustic channels has been an important area of study for undersea acoustic communications. Ocean acoustic signals are typically of low signal to noise ratio. The ocean is filled with different kinds of sounds, which is a combination of variety of natural and man-made sources, which includes breaking waves, wind, rain, marine life, ships and sonars and are mainly referred as ambient noise. The performance of an underwater acoustic system depends mainly on the characteristics of ambient noise field and the signal itself. A spread spectrum (SS) communications system is mainly based upon the concept of transmitting the required information over a much wider bandwidth than that is needed for normal transmission, thus preventing external intended and unintended interferences. In SS communication the band of the signals will occupy a wide range of frequencies and the required power density is very low, hence they are more resistant to jamming effects and interferences. The paper presents the effect of various wind speed with and without noise in a SS based BPSK system for an undersea acoustic channel and the results are plotted.
