Parameter Independent Backstepping Controller for Bidirectional Buck-Boost Converter in DC Grid Battery Interface with CPL

Accurate voltage regulation and power management with non-linear stabilizing controllers are required for reliability and stability of standalone renewable powered dc microgrids. Here, a modified backstepping design approach is utilized to design a stabilizing non-linear controller for a bidirectional buck-boost converter. The performance of the designed controller is compared with a PI controller. The backstepping controller is inherently stable as it is designed based on Lyapunov stability condition. This parameter independent design improves robustness. The derived control law is devoid of any integral or derivative terms improving speed and simplicity compared to PI controller. It also forms a generalized controller which can be applied to a bidirectional buck boost converter with any specified parameters and can be tuned to any desired closed loop performance.
