Modeling Thermodynamic and Kinetic Simulation of Hydrogen Production from Dry Reforming of Natural Gas

Bangladesh has long relied on hydrogen as an intermediate chemical feedstock in the manufacturing of ammonia in fertilizer plants, and very recently for the production of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen is also a potential clean fuel of future to replace fossil fuels. A common method of producing hydrogen is through the steam reforming of natural gas, a process that requires a significant amount of energy and generates a significant amount of carbon dioxide. The dry reforming of natural gas to make hydrogen is an alternative approach that has the advantages of recycling and reducing CO
2
emissions while also producing hydrogen. The notion of hydrogen production by dry reforming of CH4 is presented in this paper, which makes use of thermodynamic and kinetic models simulated in ASPEN PLUS. The results of this simulation were utilized to investigate the effects of various process variables. The thermodynamic model predicted a conversion of 95 percent at 900 degrees Celsius and 1 bar, but the kinetic model predicted only a conversion of 36 percent at the same temperatures and pressure.
