The Analysis on the Dielectric Breakdown Characteristics of Epoxy resin for the Compact of High Voltage Apparatus

The environmental pollution caused by greenhouse gases has been becoming the main issue of industrial society. Moreover, the eco-friendly and renewable energy projects such as the Green New-Deal project policy are actively underway worldwide. Therefore, the insulation method of high voltage apparatus has been replaced to the solid insulation materials from gas insulation materials. Epoxy resin is solid insulation materials used in high voltage apparatus. It is different dielectric breakdown characteristics according to the composition ration and the material. For the compact of high voltage apparatus, the analysis on the dielectric breakdown characteristics of epoxy resin should be performed. However, many manufactures have conducted the insulation design for high voltage apparatus based on the empirical knowledge or refer to the general documents without the analysis of dielectric breakdown characteristics of epoxy resin for the compact of high voltage apparatus is performed. Therefore, in this paper, the analysis on the dielectric breakdown characteristics of epoxy resin for the compact of high voltage apparatus is performed. Dielectric experiments of epoxy resin are conducted by applying lightning impulse voltage. To calculate the electric field intensity using the Finite Element Method (FEM), the relative permittivity of epoxy resin is measured by E4991A. The electrical breakdown voltage with 7% probability is calculated in accordance with IEC 62271-1.
