Comparison of the Effect of Series and Shunt Control Devices on the Limit of Transient Stability

The article is devoted to a comparative assessment of FACTS devices effectiveness in terms of their impact on the transient stability of parallel operation of generators of an electric power system affected by short circuits. The estimation bases on the calculation of the transient stability limit at the first angle oscillation in the simplest design scheme of an electric power system (power station - transmission line - infinite power receiving system). Based on the developed methodology of mathematical modeling of the considered control devices, it is shown that in terms of increasing the stability limit series device (SSSC) has 15-30% greater efficiency than the shut one (STATCOM) with the same power of VSC converters.
