Application of Wide-Area Measurement Data in Control Algorithms for Power System Stability Enhancement

The goal of study is to select places for installing phasor measurement units (PMU) and to substantiate possibility of applying additional voltage and frequency synchronous generators control according to WAMS data. Criteria and methodology for PMU arrangement for implementation of complete observability of power system are proposed. Software is developed to automate determining PMU installation locations based on information about network topology. Possibilities of synchronous generator additional control for increasing steady-state and transient stability level have been investigated for "North-West of Russia – Center – Belarus" power system. Additional feedbacks in power system stabilizers and automatic generator control by WAMS data (phasor difference at various substations) are proposed. Based on application of control setting joint coordination method and rotor acceleration area minimization, the level of small-signal stability is increased from 40 to 90%, transient one by 2-3 times.
