Design of Ku Band Phased Array Antenna for Synthetic Aperture Radar

A Ku band phased array antenna with 192-elements which is applied to Synthetic aperture radar is presented in this paper. An E-type microstrip patch antenna with broadband characteristics is designed as an array element. An irregular array layout of the phased array antenna is constructed, which can not only obtain high gain and keep the output power of the T/R module but also suppress the sidelobe of the transmitting beam and receiving beam in both azimuth and range directions. Meanwhile, since the digital attenuator is not used, the cost of phased array antenna is reduced.
