Abstract:

A focus measurement for astronomical images is a significant factor in astrometry research because an accurate measure of celestial objects' properties is focus-dependent. In this paper, we compare a new proposed focus measure with other focus measure operators. The operators are chosen from a review of the state-of-the-art and applied to two sequences of star clusters. These sequences are observed using the 74-inches telescope of the Kottamia astronomical observatory (KAO) at different focus positions. Each data set contains in-focus and out-of-focus frames. The focus operators are ranked according to accuracy, range, the number of false maximum, and the width of the curve. The ranking criteria clarify that the proposed reduced Tenegrad can achieve the best performance to the focus measure.
